Jennifer’s Story
Jennifer never imagined Hurricane Melissa would destroy her home.
In a matter of moments, the storm ripped her house from its foundation and changed her life forever.
“I lost everything. I don’t have anything left now.”
Like so many families affected by disaster, Jennifer never expected to need emergency shelter herself. One moment, she was home. Next, everything she had built was gone.
In the aftermath of the storm, her greatest need was simple:
“Shelter is number one. With shelter, I can cover my head and lie down at night.”
For Jennifer, shelter was not comfort. It was survival.
Today, Jennifer’s story serves as a reminder that disasters strike without warning and that recovery begins with having a safe place to rest, regroup, and begin again.

For more than two decades, the Philippines has shown us why preparedness matters.
Since 2004, ShelterBox has responded to disasters in the Philippines more than any other country, supporting families affected by typhoons, floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and conflict. As communities continue to face repeated disasters, being ready before an emergency begins can make all the difference.
That’s why ShelterBox established ShelterBox Operations Philippines (SBOP) and maintains a warehouse in Cebu stocked with emergency shelter and essential aid. Combined with experienced teams and strong local partnerships, this allows us to respond quickly when families lose their homes.
From Typhoon Haiyan to this year’s devastating earthquakes in Mindanao, our preparedness has helped us deliver support when it was needed most.

Here at home
Preparedness matters here at home, too.
When the Eaton and Palisades wildfires became the most destructive in Los Angeles history, families had only minutes to flee. Thousands of homes were destroyed, and entire communities were left to rebuild after unimaginable loss.
Because of our preparedness and strong partnerships, ShelterBox was able to respond quickly. Working alongside Rotary Zones 33 and 34 and Rotary Districts 5280 and 5300, we provided emergency support including thermal blankets, solar lights, water filters, cook sets, air purifiers, and ShelterBox tents and kits.
