Los Angeles Wildfires Displace Tens of Thousands

Update on L.A. Wildfires

This powerful video provides an update on the devastation caused by the Los Angeles wildfires and ShelterBox’s support for those impacted.

Standing In Solidarity with Los Angeles

The devastating Los Angeles wildfires have become the most destructive in the city’s history. More than 15,000 structures have been destroyed and at least 28 people were killed in the catastrophic Eaton and Palisades fires. ShelterBox USA is supporting the relief efforts to stand in solidarity with those affected in LA County who have lost everything. In partnership with Rotary Districts 5280 and 5300 in the affected areas, ShelterBox USA is supporting the communities affected as begin the long road to recovery. Our hearts are heavy as we witness the immense loss and suffering faced by families and communities.

ShelterBox USA has been able to provide vital aid to those in need. Following the destruction we have focused on helping provide some of the basics for the most vulnerable people affected. ShelterBox USA has provided hundreds of LuminAID Solar Lights, which are vital to helping ensure illumination during power outages, enhancing security during this difficult time. The solar lights have been distributed at the Pasadena Convention Center, an emergency evacuation shelter serving hundreds of displaced people, and in Altadena, where the entire community of 42,000 people was evacuated when the fires began. In Altadena alone, more than 7,000 homes and buisnesses were destroyed, and the community largely remains without power. In addition, ShelterBox USA has provided high-thermal blankets to provide warmth to people displaced, along with personal bags, and cook sets to support families in their time of need.

ShelterBox USA has also committed a $100,000 matching grant to Rotary Districts 5280 and 5300 to support the shelter and household needs in the hardest-hit areas.

ShelterBox USA will continue to monitor the emergency and remain in close communication with Rotary leadership from Districts 5280 and 5300, and local shelters to monitor needs and understand additional ways to assist.

A Message of Resilience

Among those deeply affected by the wildfires is Rene Amy, a long-time ShelterBox USA Ambassador and devoted supporter of our mission. The Eaton fire completely destroyed his home in Altadena, leaving nothing but ash. His loss is a poignant reminder of the devastating toll these wildfires have taken. Reflecting on his experience, Rene shared:

I would never in a million years have expected to be a disaster victim, but now I am. I now know what the worst day in one’s life can actually be like. The best thing about all this is seeing people come together and help each other.”

Remarkably, despite his own loss, Rene joined ShelterBox staff and Rotary partners at the Pasadena Convention Center—now home to 1,000 evacuees—helping coordinate the distribution of essential relief items. His resilience and dedication exemplify the strength of community in the face of adversity.
