Major Gifts Officer

The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for securing significant revenue for the organization from existing donors/prospects and identifies, researches and cultivates new prospects. Primary focus will be on growing a long-term, sustained donor base of individual donors for ShelterBox USA.

Public Relations and Communications Director

ShelterBox USA is a leading non-profit organization with a mission to deliver humanitarian relief in the form of equipment and materials that bring shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by natural and other disasters worldwide.


Job Purpose

The primary role of the Public Relations and Communications Director will be to help set the tone and the voice for the organization as it expands to serve more people globally. Recognized with four-stars from Charity Navigator and selected as the project partner of Rotary International for disaster relief, ShelterBox USA is poised for extraordinary growth. Reporting to the President, this position will be responsible for developing integrated and dynamic communications strategies, creating content that drives awareness and support for the organization. The ideal candidate is creative, driven, strategic, and confident, and possesses the ability to work successfully in an entrepreneurial and fast-paced environment.  


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Public Relations and Communications Director duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Develop and implement ShelterBox USA PR/Communications short and long range plans to help the organization reach ambitious awareness and revenue goals 

Ensure the brand voice, messaging and outreach efforts of the organization are consistent, timely and relevant

Write press releases, pitches, feature stories, and media alerts

Create compelling content that drives media and key stakeholder attention

Advance the organization’s domestic and global awareness, reputation, and image by working closely with multiple media outlets and social influencers

Generate awareness of the organization through earned and editorial media 

Effectively pitch to a variety of media outlets for maximum pick-up

Act as primary interface with national, regional, and local media outlets

Collaborate with the ShelterBox UK headquarters on branding and messaging

Work with USA team to create consistent, brand-appropriate communications that deliver the highest impact to ShelterBox audiences

Work closely with Celebrity Ambassadors for ShelterBox and coordinate their activities

Develop and administer a PR Toolkit for volunteer Ambassadors to leverage in local markets to tell the story of the organization

Manage and support incoming media inquiries 

Schedule and coordinate speaking engagements, appearances, photo shoots and other special events

In conjunction with the President, develop, implement and coordinate an organization wide public relations strategy to raise awareness of the organization 

Support President and Board of Directors for their public speaking and publicity needs

Build and expand national and regional media contacts and maintain an accurate database of media contacts and track earned media coverage

Manage reputation management, disaster and crisis communications, and day to day activities

Provide marketing support to fundraising department as needed

Other duties as assigned 

Required Skills/Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree (Marketing, Communications, Journalism preferred) with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a fast-paced communication/marketing/PR environment

High-profile media relations, executive communications, compelling content development, social media, communication/PR metrics and analysis

Exceptional skills in writing, editing, and verbal communications (knowledge of AP writing)

Ability to be a strategic thinker one moment and jump back to details and planning the next

Strong interpersonal skills and team player

Demonstrated initiative and be a self-starter

Proven ability to establish effective working relationships with media and community contacts (broadcast, print, radio, social media)

Ability to speak in public forums

Ability to work effectively in a team environment, both within the California branch as well as remote offices and locations

Demonstrated problem solving, analysis, information gathering and monitoring skills

Understand ethical behavior and non-profit business practices and ensure own behavior is consistent with these standards and align with the values of the organization

Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals and track details, data, activities and information

Ability to work independently and on-time

Professional, friendly and courteous demeanor

Ability to multi-task and accept diverse assignments


This is a full-time exempt (salaried) position.  Normal work hours are a standard work week.  Overtime may be required.   Additionally, due to the nature of a disaster relief organization, employees may be asked to work extended hours or on holidays without much advance notice.

Working Environment and Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands or arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  

Preferred that the employee will primarily be located in the California office but will be required to travel and perform duties at external locations.

**Position may be remote depending on location of candidate.


Travel is required for this position. 

Reporting Relationship

This position reports to the President.

Supervisory Role

This position may supervise one employee:  the Communications Manager.
